The Bad Art Club: Thursday 8th October

The Bad Art Club

Thursday 8th October

7pm to 9pm

Once a month we will be dedicating two hours to making bad art!

But why? You ask…

Since the beginning of life as we know it humans have strived to be creative, our creativity and curiosity have helped us to discover wonderful and life changing things (things like fire for cooking, the wheel, and sliced bread!) humans have created art for a very very long time, the earliest documented piece is 73,000 years old!

Why is creativity so important? Firstly it tells a story, there were no alphabets, no real language, especially as we know it today, so art was a form of communication and storytelling, Where is the best hunting ground? Look at the wall, How many people did that lion kill? Look at the wall. How many kids does Dave have? Look at the wall, you get the idea.

On to modern times…Why is it important to be creative?

Creativity is the mother of innovation, it drives our ability to generate original ideas, connect unrelated concepts, and find novel solutions to challenges. When is the last time you allowed yourself to play? I bet it’s been a while.

Creativity through art has so many health benefits it’s too many to list them all, but when you are allowed to play, to create simply for the process and not the outcome you are regulating your nervous system, you are allowing your brain to relax and have fun, it reduces stress, builds brain health, enhances communication, builds confidence, fosters empathy and provides purpose to name a few.

And that’s where the bad art club comes in, we believe that no art is bad art but the lives we live force perfection on us, we think that if it’s not perfect then why bother, that creating simply for the process is a waste of time, But that is exactly the reason to bother, making what you think of as bad art is better than making no art at all and just sitting staring at the TV or worse scrolling on your phone for hours at a time. When we give ourself time to create it lights up our brain, it allows us to breathe and get in to a flow state, even if we can’t see the benefits, they are happening!

So we have created this monthly Art club where we won’t be focusing on perfection, but on showing up and making art, enjoying the process as we explore different materials and mediums. This no pressure session is geared towards mental health and creativity not making the most perfect drawing, expect mess, exploration and joy. We will explore different mediums, including paints, pastels, collage, stencils, stitch, fibre art, plus much more.

These sessions are open to people age 14 plus, but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

You are encouraged to bring along your own art supplies to explore, however we do have a selection for you to use, including, paints, pens, pencils, tools and papers.
