Zine Making Workshop: Saturday 19th September 10am
Zine Making Morning Session
Saturday 19th September
10am to 12 noon.
A zine (pronounced "zeen") is a small, self-published booklet or magazine. It is usually made by one person or a tiny group. People create zines by hand or with a copier.
The modern zine was born in the 1930s when science fiction fans created the first "fanzines" to trade stories, a trend that expanded in 1947 with Vice Versa, the first underground lesbian publication.
The invention of the commercial photocopier in the 1960s and 1970s made cheap duplication easy, allowing the late-1970s punk movement to adopt a raw, cut-and-paste aesthetic to document their own music and anti-establishment views. This activist energy evolved in the 1990s with the feminist Riot Grrrl movement, which used zines to openly discuss gender roles, body image, and sexuality.
Despite the rise of the internet, physical zines endure today as an essential, uncensored medium for marginalized voices and independent artists celebrated at community zine fests and preserved in library archives.
People share personal ideas, art, or niche topics instead of aiming for profit, Short for fanzine or magazine, there are many ways to make a zine but it mostly includes Folded paper, simple staples, and photocopies as well as self expression and lots of art!
In this workshop we will explore the zine, how it is constructed and the most common themes of Art, poetry, personal life stories, and current life topics.
